Being a good neighbour

Nice Neighbours

Having good neighbours means a lot to me. Maybe it's part of my upbringing where we had good neighbours when I was a child. It definitely means a lot to me to have good neighbours though and I like it to be reciprocal.

So when I brought the kids to our next door neighbours house for Halloween and Martin answered the door on crutches, I got a fright. I asked him what happened and he told me he had knee surgery, but recovery wasn't going all that well and the nerves hadn't taken properly yet.

I promised to keep him in my prayers, but that wasn't enough, so I decided to get him a get well soon card too. Then I decided I'd make him a Get Well soon hamper. I bought a lovely bottle of 2018 Rioja reserva, some of his favourite IPAs, some crisps, chocolates and other snacks as can be seen in the photos below.

He was really taken aback when he answered the door and saw me with the hamper. He couldn't believe it was for him!

It's the little things in life.

That is an amazing gesture! Good neighbours can be very profitable (I am not sure that is the right word but my English this morning is not working - I still need more coffee). These gestures are becoming so rare these days. Luckily, where I live, we also have this kind of relationship with the neighbors.

Yes, I know what you are saying, you mean they are very rewarding and valuable. You are dead right, they really are and it's so important to make time for them even when things seem very very busy.

Cool that you live in a similar neighbourhood with caring neighbours.

Exactly! It is a kind of reciprocity that we individuals have slowly forgotten. We get so caught up in our own work and doings that we tend to forget that we live next to people.

Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful experience!

My wife and I are pretty private and reserved, so it is hard for us to be social with our neighbors like that. It's cool that you have that relationship.

We're all different. My wife used to be pretty reserved too, but since moving back to Galway she has loved getting to know all our neighbours in the countryside.

That is cool! We did have a neighbor that we kind of talked to, but she passed away a couple of years ago.

Often you just have to break the ice, by calling around or giving them a Christmas present or card.. worth a try as good neighbours are priceless

Yeah, we got some new neighbors that I think tried that with us, but we just aren't that social :) It's a curse!

Ha ha, OK, fair enough
