New Hive New Swarm

in #bees6 years ago

Hey everyone, we recently started making hives. The traditional wood for making hives is generally pine, my landlord has a factory with lots of off cut wood so he decided to make these from meranti and if not why not? They look amazing, its a much harder wood than pine and bees clearly love it!

We put this box out about two weeks ago and took a fat chance as it is not considered 'normal' to catch swarms in winter, we did ;)

I generally enjoy checking my hives a few times a week most often take pics too.. Because this hive is elevated I was lucky enough to get some ground shots looking up managing to capture a few bees entering and exiting the hive!

A close up of the right hand side door of the hive, many times the bees chose a left or right door in which they use more regularly at times they close the other door in the case of a larger swarm they are just as busy with both entrances.

Today I processed about 15 kgs of honey which we harvested last week I shall post some pics of that coming soon.

Be sure to stay tuned for more of my epic bee-keeping adventures.
Have a magic week.

Cheer$;)

Sort:

Is that the size of your summertime entrance or has the entrance been reduced for the winter? That times two, one on either side of the hive?

I have a problem with mice and I would like to make the fix permanent, just build it into the hive. That would work. I'm pretty sure one of our mice wont fit through that entrance.

Hey bud that is a standard langstroth entrance around 10mm high and 70mm odd wide. They like small entrances generally if its too big they close up these they tend never to modify which would tell me they are happy with how they are. Mice will not get in here for certain. Cheer$;)
