Plucking Some Gems ~ DC Edition

A couple of weeks back I wrote a piece about how we are helping a customer clear out some room from their storage unit. He’s a maniac and hoarded decades worth of comics, statues, toys, and everything in between. He wants to shed most of the comics and we struck a deal to snag the boxes sight unseen. Some of these boxes have some gigantic mega turds, while some have some tasty gems.

My business partner and I have quickly rummaged through the boxes we’ve yanked this far...and I do mean quickly meaning there are definitely books we are missing. But so far we’ve managed to find some quality books. I popped up a piece covering some of the Independent titles here

Today I’ll be taking a peek at the DC comics leaving Marvel for the final one as it’s the largest chunk. So let’s jump into it!!!

These Chromium reprints of some golden age keys are a tough find in the wild. The regular released reprints fetch $10-$15 bucks while the Chromium counterparts can bring in a crisp $50 a pop.

A few signed books with COA’s. These are always a tad tougher to move but with one signed by Jim Lee it shouldn’t be too much of an issue. Maybe $50 bucks a pop as well?!?

Reprints of key issues always perform well over time. 99.9% of the world’s population can’t afford this book so they will settle for a cheaper reprint. This US Postal Service reprint of the most expensive comic in the world...the Holy Grail of funny books...Action Comics #1, will still sell for $30 bucks or so. Not a bad deal considering a high grade copy of the real deal sold a few years back for just over $3 Million!!!

A smattering of 1st appearances, cool covers, and low tiered keys & #1’s make up this chunk. 1st Hitman...1st Vixen...1st Nightwing...1st Hush...1st Teen Titans...1st Bolland Wonder Woman cover. These all bring in $20-$50 a piece. Nothing to retire off of but I like $20 dollar bills...don’t you?!?

Then there are the Platimums. These were incentives given to retailers back in the 90’s on “key” issues. Batman #492 is the start of Knightfall. To my surprise...I almost threw up when I saw how little this book currently brings in. This used to be a $100 plus and I’m seeing copies go for under $10 bucks right now. There is ZERO chance I let this go for that kind of cash. I’d rather burn it. It’ll rebound in time and I’ll wait it out as it’s a tough book to find.

The Superman #75 Platimun bagged edition averages $150ish but can reach $200 or so depending on the market. We had one a few years back that we moved for $200 and it sat on the wall for only a couple weeks. I’ll probably pride it in that same realm.

There are tons of other cool books but this was just a small sampling of some DC’s we plucked. Marvel...that’s where some biggies are.

Coming soon...

How do you figure out what are the good ones and which ones are crap. Just from years experience, I'm assuming.

I've always thought it would be fun to see if I can find some valuable cards or comics at a garage sale or something, but never know the value of what I'm looking like to even know.

Wow, that’s a lot of cool stuff! Collectors must be knocking your door down!

Nice finds. Hope it turns out profitable

Have I mentioned lately that I love your posts? because I do. though...this one makes me feel pretty old...any talk of the 90s actually being 30 years ago makes my back start to hurt.

Congratulations @blewitt!
