In and of itself, I think both up/down is required for a self-regulating system.... which is what I’m under the impression we’re trying to create.

I think there is some value in feedback, which is what a cybernetic (ie, self-regulating/governing) system needs.

The problem as I see it at present is that an upvote or a downvote isn’t really effective feedback to let the system learn and grow.

What we need is engagement, and up or down voting is not engagement.

Getting upvotes is not an indication of what or how people liked my content; just like getting a downvote doesn’t give me an indication of what someone doesn’t like about it.

But a comment — like what you’ve done — provides the impetus to consider something in light of new information. It’s valuable feedback because it changes in some way how I consider this idea and how that idea in turn informs how I interact in the other cybernetic organism, which influences how that organism behaves, which influences how each of the parts behave, and so on.....

The current behaviour of both upvoting and downvoting is based purely on ‘the numbers’. But it’s not ‘numbers’ that govern the system. It’s humans. Humans make the decision to write bot code. Humans make decisions to upvote or downvote or to follow a curation trail or to pay a bidbot.

Algorithms and code will not change human behaviour. We’re wanting a shift in culture, not a change in the code.

Has anyone asked the ‘spammers’ what their intention is? There may well be people getting flagged who might genuinely not realise what their doing is pissing off the majority?

When a flag is dropped on a post, does the person who flagged provide a reason? Why not? Is it because they didn’t cite the source of the stock photo they used? Tell them, and they won’t make the same mistake.

If it’s just because you don’t agree with their politics or their opinion or their religion or whatever, then what right do you have to impose your opinion in an aggressive manner...

I think there are even more nuances to this whole thing than even I care to admit... I’m not sure there’s an easy answer.

But we are at an edge here, and I think it’s worth being here and having the conversations. I think there’s a wonderful human experiment happening here....
