Although sports-centered anime is not my favorite genre, this story sounds interesting as apparently there are other personal themes running throughout this anime series.

Not a lot of people are into sports anime, so that's understandable. However, some of them do focus more on the story rather than the game like "Battery" or "Major" (both baseball-drama anime).
