It's been a while since I watched an anime from this genre, but I'm glad I did. It's eerily creepy, but still has a bunch of cuteness in it. More so, the plot is to my liking. What I'm talking about is the fantasy and horror anime called DARK GATHERING. Let me tell you about it.

In the series, one of the main characters named Keitarou is very sensitive to the supernatural. Because of this, spirits are very much attracted to him to the point of him being cursed by one.
He became a social recluse, but with the support of his childhood friend Eiko, he's trying to live a normal life again. To start with, he accepted a job of becoming a private tutor and his first tutee was the promising student Yayoi-chan who happened to be Eiko's cousin.

Yayoi-chan isn't your ordinary child, though. She got into a vehicular accident which killed both of her parents. Since then, another set of pupils appeared in her eyes allowing her to see into the spirit world. Because of this newfound supernatural power, she witnessed how her mother's soul was kidnapped by a certain entity. And now, she's in her quest of taking her mother's soul back.

Witnessing Keitarou's strong spiritual presence, she somehow made him assist her in her quest. Together, they'd collect evil spirits and create "graduates" which would in turn help them face that entity. Let's check the trailer below.

I really enjoyed watching it and I can't wait for the second season. I need it for my peace of mind. haha But seriously, it's a very exciting series.
Every adventure they do together is packed with mystery, horror and excitement. The characters are very unique and interesting... even the backstory of the evil spirits they're trying to get is amusing and would make you curious. Though I'm not sure, but I feel that the haunted places they go to have actual references in Japan like the haunted tunnels, falls, shrines, etc..
Not only that, some of the supernatural and cultural aspect were also referenced in actual happenings, like the group suicide mystery and so on. Perhaps I've heard it from some of my students or when I try to watch mysteries and true crime stories about Japan.
Towards the end of season one, I got a lot of unanswered questions and I enjoy it that way. It made me anticipate for the second season more. I hope they release the continuation soon!
