The first time I came to Japan, the airport advised to arrive 3 hours in advance for international flights. I don't know if they still do. This would have been a bit over 20 years ago. Having never flown outside the US before, I followed their advice and got there 3 hours early. ...only to make it through the check-in line in about 10 minutes, giving me over two hours to kill. On one hand it was annoying and a bit boring, but on the other hand... completely stress-free. I had time to go over my lists, make sure I had everything ready, and even stop for a snack before going. No guinness, sadly. I think the cheap one was probably bud light or something. Not good, but passable when thirsty. Anyway, because of that I almost always arrive at least two hours early, just to give myself the same relaxing time. Having a family now, I need that relaxing time before the flight! haha
