Dry January III post and Setenil de las Bodegas for Beer Saturday

Dry January II

It's my third week of dry January and I'm still going strong. We brought the kids out for dinner on Friday evening to a local bar, restaurant, and I wasn't even tempted. When I decide that I'm doing something, I'm pretty determined.

So once again, not so much as a smell of Porter or a whiff of IPA this week. Ok, some raised eyebrows. Let me educate the uninformed again about what Dry January is.

I'm not sure if this is even a thing outside of Ireland, but here in the emerald isle Dry January is pretty common. After lots of nights out with friends and family in the weeks leading up to Christmas and the nights out over Christmas, where many people enjoy some wine, beer and other alcohol drinks, people feel like taking a break from it all, and so Dry January came to be.

I have done it a few times myself and it's always quite enjoyable to do to be honest. It's a good detox and offers a good chance to rekindle some healthy habits like workouts, jogs and the likes. By the time February comes around, you are looking forward to a night out again, and it's good for your health too.

Does that mean no Beer Saturday posts??

Get out of town! Ye know that I won't miss my Beer Saturday posts!

Of course,I will still post. I'll think of something Beer related to post about, whether it's a funny story or some photos of beers I have enjoyed in the past, I'll try to still post.

Today I'm going to look back at a few beers in a really funky Spanish town called Setenil de las Bodegas.

We holiday in Spain at least once a year, sometimes twice and we like to discover new places each time we visit.

Setenil de las Bodegas is what the Spanish call a pueblo or small town and is famous for its dwellings built into a rock that hangs above the Río Guadalporcún, which you will see in my photographs that I share as part of this post.

The Pueblo is located 157 kilometres northeast of Cádiz and is within around two hours driving distance of Benahavis, where we often go on our holidays. It has a remarkable setting along a narrow river gorge. We were lucky enough to hear about it, when I ended up setting beside a Polish lady who I got chatting to on the flight to Malaga with my family. There are five of us, so one of us always ends up sitting beside a stranger.

We learned while we were there that the town's Castilian name came from the Roman Latin phrase septem nihil which translates to seven times nothing. This is reference to the battles between the Christians and the Moors and more specifically refers to the Moorish town's resistance to Christian assault, allegedly being captured only after seven sieges.

It's a Hive of activity these days and is a popular tourist destination, as you can see.

Postcards

Postcards are always a good way to find out what's worth seeing nearby. So I often check out some postcards when I arrive someplace new.

A few Beers

So what's all this got to do with Beer Saturday?

Well, we found a nice little place to eat just off the main street.

It was tucked away down a little narrow street, and as you can see below a car or van can only just about pass.

The Pueblo has a lovely chilled out vibe to it, with people ambling around without a care in the world.

We had a few beer local beers while we were there, as you can see below.

Sort:

Cruzcampo is terrible, hardly beer at all :)

If it's hot and the Cruzcampo is icy cold it still hits the spot, believe me 👌
