I just came across the Selfie Challenge, and I thought I would join the fun.
How Hive will might revolutionize the world!
First, congrats to @nicollefiallo, @jeffjagoe, @sn0n, and @xxxxxxxxxx for creating a movement. Whether on purpose or not, that was quite the feat, and you have my respect for that.
Second, when there are rewards in play, the claws come out.
#Hive has the potential to change the world. Every one of us intentionally gathers in the same digital space because we have been positively impacted, in some way or other.
We choose #hive because of the project, the people, the vision, and honestly, the possibility of future rewards. What we are lacking (but working on) is a massive wave of new users who will propel #hive to a new height like a massive tidal wave.
Oh, boy! That will be a fun ride.
The potential is real. The promise is sweet, but we all have to work together to make this a reality (whether we like it or not).
The Problem
Plain and simply put, we all come for different reasons, we all value different things, and we all put up with different "garbage."
The beauty of our blockchain/community is also one of our biggest obstacles. We all have the right to show our approval and disapproval via our (down)votes. And this, my friends, can cause emotions to rise!
So this is how things play out.
- Someone comes up with a "great" post idea - Totally allowable in the #hive community
- Someone else wholly agrees that the post was great. They exercise their freedom/right to show support.
- Snowball effect! Tens, maybe hundreds, of other people agree.
- The results? Payout!
- Uh oh! The payout is noticeable! And people start to pay attention to the dollar signs.
- Other people find the idea to be less than great. So they exercise their freedom/right to show their disapproval.
- The post creator gets "offended" because he/she thought the post was great and expresses concern - completely acceptable. Even when not civil, still allowable.
- The downvoters still maintain their position - it may be your "treasure," but it is still my "trash."
- Optional, but not uncommon - Tensions continue to escalate. Feelings get hurt even more. And watch out ladies and gentlemen, we are in an all-out downvote war! Hide your kids. It is going to get ugly!
The Problem Is Beautiful (and Messy)
Step 1-8 (and Optional #9) are all part of the process. Each action and reaction is acceptable based on the rules of the blockchain. And whether we like it or not, these are "our" rules that we get to/have to play by.
Now I understand the rules because I have been around for almost three years. But the newbie off the street, he does not understand.
I know we all want to move towards Communities and Community-Based Tokens, but until we reach that goal, we all share the same space, the same community, and the same reward pool.
We will not agree on what makes content great. We will have to struggle to determine what types of short-form content deserve rewards. But remember, as we are making these critical decisions, we are all banking on that wave of new users that leads us to mass adoptions. They need us! We need them!
