The crowded auditorium swarmed with excitement. Family and friends gathered to cheer on their loved ones. Twenty-five adventurers, they were. Unafraid and committed, they vowed. Completion of the insurmountable wager was their challenge. At stake was a a full-ride, all expense paid travel abroad sponsored by an elusive company's overseas program.

A thunderous roar spread across the room upon announcement of each candidate's name to study at an ivy league school.

Alicia turned and nudged Josh. "Congratulations friend."

"Same to you, Alicia. But I expected you among the finalists vying for the medical school program." Josh flashed a genuine smile as he leaned across and squeezed her arm.

"Feels like undergrad. Are we to expect one continuous challenge in life?" Turning her head, Alicia glanced over the requirements for the entrance competition. Wrinkling her nose, she shrugged, then let slip a subdued sigh.

"Seems like it. Let's just concentrate on this one for now. Else the future may not look so bright." Josh flashed a semi-confident smile in her direction. Inside, his stomach churned. A week later, he and Alicia reported to the company for details and gear for the challenge.

All competitors met at the assigned location.

Josh's pulse beat faster dissecting the costs for medical school. He surveyed his companions. wondering whether his other opponents possessed any previous knowledge of the industry. He'd need the competitive edge, he analyzed, if he hoped to win the triathlon.

Neither Josh nor Alicia were the swiftest competitors vying for the scholarships. Both, however, managed to complete two legs of the various competitions, but their positions ranked in the bottom half. More closer to the truth; the final two slots held their names.

Worried he wouldn't be able to finish, he considered other options to advance his medical studies. Athletic competition was not his strongest attribute. Paired together, but not as teammates, he approached Alicia. "Are you thinking we should eliminate ourselves?"

"Not on my watch!" Alicia retorted, frowning at the suggestion, then urged with balled fists high in the air that landed on Josh's chest. "No pain, no gain, and absolutely no surrender, remember! It's how we made it through undergrad."

The last day of competition.

Josh prayed. Ashamed for suggesting they quit, he tightened his headband leaving sufficient space to prevent the blistering sun from attacking his neck. The pocket size first-aid kit he crammed into his backpack would help.

Five miles left to finish. Alicia's step slowed. Falling behind him, she stopped then tumbled in the sand. Josh rushed and pulled hard. "Wake up," he begged, wiping away miniature pebbles. Her lips parched and unable to speak, he quickly removed the first aid kit.

He rose to his feet. Hands behind his head, he turned around several times as if a maze now presented itself of life choices. This event wasn't a team effort, he reasoned. He needed to win. Perhaps a chance slot was still available if he made it to the finish line. Becoming a physician was his life's dream. Nothing could stand in the way if he only could show his determination to the company. Even if he came in last place.

But their nights in library study sessions flooded his thoughts. The knowledge that he would have given up had it not been for her encouragement wiped away his thoughts of leaving her. The sister he never had.

His hands flew to his temples. One day I'll take the oath to save lives no matter the circumstances, he remembered.

Staring in the distance, he acknowledged with regret that others had already forged to the finish line.

The few drops of water from his pouch roused Alicia. Still weak, he managed to hoist her up. In his weak state and hers even weaker, he managed to clasp her waist and drag her a few feet until they reached a sparse shade tree. Leaning over, he administered what items in his first aid kit that would help.

In the distance, the amber light flickered, beckoning them to brave the desert sands he thought.

With his head bowed, he leaned against Alicia and didn't notice the figure approaching.

The tall, slender man stood in front of a medical vehicle. Exhausted, Josh could only watch as the gentleman reached out his hand.

"Congratulations Josh. You too Alicia," the man pointed at them, then shook their hands.

"I don't understand," Josh stammered while attempting to rouse Alicia. The man assisted them both to the vehicle for medical attention.

"You see, the race was not to the swift, but to the compassionate." The man continued. "The world needs more of your kind, especially since you've indicated your desire to work with Doctors Without Borders. Good luck to you both."

I smiled as I got to the end of this story. You always have a surprise waiting somewhere in your stories! With Alicia's fall and Josh stopping to help her, I was sure there was no way they would win the triathlon.

There's a life lesson in this piece. Sometimes life presents a challenge that may seem like there's no way out but our response to it and how we handle things is often the win. Not necessarily getting to the finish line. Like the tall man said, *the race is not to the swift"!

Beautifully written as always. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful Sunday. !PIMP 💕

Hello @kemmyb. You are correct. There is a life lesson in the story. Sometimes individuals concentrate more on winning and the end goal than the details of getting to the finish line. Friendships and relationships are compromised along the way. What I think sometimes is that "is it worth it to reach the end" look back, and you've laid waste to the foundation of your life or sacrificed ethics. There is meaning to the beginning, the middle, and the end of one's goals. And who knows, perhaps a surprise at the end.

Thanks so much for your visit and kind compliment for my story. I'm pleased you found it interesting. I appreciate your engagement and support.

Take care and have a good rest of your week.

Oh this was such a blessing to my heart. This is the very reason I don't miss an opportunity to be kind to someone. It could be as little as stopping to smile and say hi, handing someone a surprise gift or even complimenting someone.

As a doctor, compassion comes before the money and Josh knew this well.
