Ablaze's Hearty and Healthy Sandwich with homegrown Greens

You just can't beat homegrown food. It tastes healthier. It looks healthier. It is healthier. You know exactly what went into it and can be confident that no pesticides or herbicides were used.

I remember staying at my friend's Toni's house before in Majorca, he was a friend from Spain who my wife and I got to know when he lived in Galway. When he left Galway, we stayed in touch via email. My wife and I ended up travelling along the south coast of France and Spain for a summer and we included the island of Majorca in our trip and stayed for one week in Port de Pollença where Toni was from. He ended up giving us a beautiful brand new three bed apartment for the week, which was so kind and we met his friends and family, which was really cool.

Great story Ablaze, but what's it got to do with food? Well, he brought us to his home house a few times, where his family had their own tomatoes, peppers etc. We picked some bits and pieces and made some salad and gazpacho to accompany our lunch. The smell of those tomatoes was amazing and the salad and gazpacho were extra special, as they were not shop bought.

My own Dad has always been a great man for the homegrown lettuce, cabbage and potatoes here in Ireland and also forraging for Hazel nuts, black berries, crab apples and the like. My brother is now growing his own food out on the farm and that is the genesis for this post.

I was out on the farm helping him last week and when I was leaving he said stop into the poly tunnel and grab, some tomatoes, lettuce and rocket, so I did and they went in my sandwiches for the next week and were absolutely delicious as you can see below.

I love it! That looks delicious man! Always nice when you can use home grown produce too!

Thanks man, I'm like Joey in Friends. Love a good sandwich!! And definitely can't go wrong with homegrown food 👍

Homegrown veg may not look the prettiest but I think they're definitely the tastiest

100% and to be honest I get a kick out of it if the carrot is bent or the lettuce leaves are out of proportion. Modern supermarket food is so homogeneous and it's a disgrace that perfectly good nutritious food gets don't for cosmetic reasons, when we have people starving in this world 😢

Awesome! I love sourdough bread! Homegrown ingredients are so much better. I have a garden year round here in southern California that produces most of the time, I love it! Awesome sandwich, homegrown veggies and fresh!

Ya I like the sourdough too. I must confess I buy it, but my Irish friend @deirdyweirdy makes her own. Not sure if you know her, but her stories and posts are always worth a read. They tend to be packed with honesty, humour, humility and a fine dollop of good auld cynicism (a must in today's world)

Is there much to making the sourdough Deirdy?

When you have a machine like I do babe, the sourdough makes itself! At button pushing, I'm quite the master...and thanks for the glowing testimonial.
