Miley Cyrus – “Jolene”
“Jolene” (2012 – original from 1973)
With this cover of the Dolly Parton song “Jolene,” Miley Cyrus proved that she’s much more than a teeny bopper / pop star.
Miley recorded this song as part of her 2012 Backyard Sessions in – yes – in her own backyard. In the natural outdoor setting, the musicians were left with not much more than their instruments and their talents.
Heartful and Soulful
With her impassioned, dynamic, and “darkly gorgeous vocals,” Miley managed the rare and difficult feat of improving on an already great song. As the ‘60s star Melanie Safka (aka Melanie) said about this soulful cover, “Her heart is really in the music.” Really.
Miley Cyrus
After originally gaining fame as a child actress and teen idol, Miley has become known as a mature, talented, and creative artist.
In 2013, MTV named her “Artist of the Year.” And in both 2008 and 2014, TIME magazine included her on its list of 100 Most Influential People. Miley’s influence is not only broad, it’s also noble. During her second Backyard Sessions, in 2015, she announced the formation of a philanthropic organization called the “Happy Hippie Foundation .” The non-profit group provides help and support for vulnerable youth, particularly those who are homeless and those who identify as LGBTQ. Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don't take him just because you can Your beauty is beyond compare
With flaming locks of auburn hair
With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green Your smile is like a breath of spring
Your voice is soft like summer rain
And I cannot compete with you, Jolene He talks about you in his sleep
There's nothing I can do to keep
From crying when he calls your name, Jolene And I can easily understand
How you could easily take my man
But you don't know what he means to me, Jolene Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
I'm begging of you please don't take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don't take him just because you can You could have your choice of men
But I could never love again
He's the only one for me, Jolene I had to have this talk with you
My happiness depends on you
And whatever you decide to do, Jolene Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
I'm begging of you please don't take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don't take him even though you can Jolene, Jolene (Image source) Dolly Parton – “Jolene”
