SteemWorld ~ Weekly Support ~ #1

Updates

I'm in the final steps of finishing the first version of the Post Editor and it's exciting to write my weekly post with it today. It's hard to estimate exactly when the editor will be ready to be used, but I think the testing phase can begin within the next 2-3 days.

After writing thousands of lines of code, optimizing the layout and drawing many button images in the past week, I do feel a bit exhausted, but at the same time I'm more convinced than ever before that this will be a really amazing toolbox for creating and editing our Steem posts in a very comfortable and intuitive way.

As many times before, the journey has been the goal without having an exact target destination for each day. My focus was just concentrated on realizing the next few steps, never on the whole mountain which I need to move. That makes creating new things easier, because there are no limits in my head stopping me from building the impossible.

The editor comes with features for exporting/importing posts and syntax templates in JSON format. Even if I just began to use it for the first time, I already love it. I now have a directory 'steem' on my PC which contains two sub directories 'posts' and 'templates' to be able to access my text and logo snippets in an easy way.

Preview

Here is a preview of the editor's post data form:

General Data

Beneficiaries

In this section it will be possible to setup beneficiaries for our post. The account @steemworld.org will automatically be set with 10% (percentage may change in future).

I've planned to use that account for receiving beneficiary rewards without ever making a Powerdown from there, so that it will grow over time and it can later be used to give SteemWorld users a vote on their posts in return.

Adding a beneficiary for a post:

The maximum value of the percentage slider in this case is set to 65%, because 35% are already used for other accounts.

Tools

There is not much to see in here yet, but I needed a place for adding additional post related tools and I think an extra tab is a good solution for all things to come:

I created this kind of image buttons, so that users can easily understand what the meaning of the smaller buttons inside the syntax input area is (there is no space for additional text on the syntax editor buttons. More details will be released in my next post).

Just a small addition to show what I mean

The same export/import functionality will be available in the syntax editor box for importing and exporting templates with a click:

I won't describe all the buttons and possibilities in this post, because I first want to change a few things in the coming days. A few buttons on the left side of the syntax editor must go and they will only be reachable via the context menu that shows up when clicking on the '<>' button. More on this soon.

Testers needed

As I've planned to begin the testing phase in the next few days and I want to have some people trying the editor out, before I will release it for the masses, you are welcome to join the testing group.

Just let me know in a comment, if you want to be an alpha tester and I will activate the editor for your account as soon as I'm ready to start.

Stay tuned and have a wonderful week ;)

It reminds of this video:

LG, Chiller

Dear @steemchiller, you are in the same gap as me with SteemWki. Nobody wants to test your new Editor. I saw it working, now I'm very interested in testing the software. Please give a test-account to @afrog.
Thanks a lot Chiller!

I love your editor already! Since I am on steem(it) I am using https://stackedit.io/ as editor, which is for me perfect, but I am very curious to see the one you have created.

I would like to be an alpha tester (@actifit-peter and @peter2017, my second account, if possible)!

Thank you!

My focus was just concentrated on realizing the next few steps, never on the whole mountain which I need to move.

Good idea. Now i understand how you can manage so many things just for steemworld! Your work is amazing! Lieben Gruß Kadna

Hallo lieber @steemchiller,

@germansailor

LG, Chiller

Vielen Dank für die schnelle Antwort. Du hast den Finger drauf ;)
In der Zwischenzeit hatte ich unter
Setings > Security > Use SteemConnect For Signing = Yes

Hi @chbartist, thanks for your support! Are you also on official steem.chat?
You can always reach me there via https://steem.chat/direct/steemchiller
I don't use discord very often, because of all the blinky stuff that irritates me and I don't like my ip to be tracked.

Ok friend!

Klasse Arbeit. Meinen herzlichsten Dank.

I can see you don’t stop working, cool!
I would like to help you testing. I use mobile devices mainly but also laptops so I think it can be useful.
Try and enjoy a bit the weekend, cheers

Testers needed

Thanks for working hard to improve SteemWorld. I admire your dedication. I would love to sign up for testing. Please let me know what is involved. I am a small sports contest host, so I post 6-8 per week. I can't wait to try this tool. The beneficiary part looks very useful.

Appreciating your hard work for us. I have lot of expectation form you, some day ago i was thinking about thinking about this thing if chiller make an post editor for us, it will be the best one, because chiller know that what will be the best for user.

Thank you so much.

It will be interesting @steemchiller ...

... to see what your vision of a post editor looks like, once you are comfortable it is ready for testing.

I am willing to help with the testing, with one important caveat. I simply don't have the time to spend "in here," as much as I might like. So ... My input, accordingly, would likely be limited. But, hopefully useful, as I believe I do have a pretty sharp "eye out" for details that you might find of some benefit.

Also, very much looking forward to what you have in mind with the SDS services, as I have long wanted the ability to query Steem data for ad hoc information.

Until next time, I hope all is well with you and yours!

Thank you @roleerob!

Let me tell you a secret... :) I didn't plan anything regarding to how exactly the testing should proceed and I think by giving the process a name like 'alpha testing' I was able to avoid a flood of too many willing Steemians knocking on my 'testing door' at the same time... ^^

So, I don't expect much feedback and no input would also be a good input, because then the editor seems to work. I just want to make sure that it's possible to create and edit posts with the editor using different devices and browsers. And maybe there will appear one or the other idea for taking the whole thing to the next level in future.

I will let you know in the coming days, when it's ready to be tested ;)

Okay, very good @steemchiller ...

Hey, @steemchiller.

Looking good. It's exciting to see it come so far so fast and to know that it will soon be open for testing.

I fully understand and fully support the idea of having you or steemworld being a beneficiary. It's really the fairest and most practical way I've seen for 'compensating' for the use of a dApp.

Just to be clear, we won't have to go in and designate the beneficiary if it's steemworld, but if we want additional beneficiaries, we will need to add? And the amount to go to the beneficiary—will it be fixed, or can it be altered?

Not sure how or when, since you have a lot you want to accomplish, but it might not be a bad idea to take a day or two off once some of this is completed, just so you don't burn yourself out. :)

Hi @glenalbrethsen!

Just to be clear, we won't have to go in and designate the beneficiary if it's steemworld, but if we want additional beneficiaries, we will need to add?

Exactly.

And the amount to go to the beneficiary—will it be fixed, or can it be altered?

The amount for @steemworld.org will always be 10% (may change in future, but I first need to find out how it will work out with this percentage). Of course, all other beneficiaries can freely be edited.

Hey, @steemchiller

Just swung by to look for your weekly post, and don't see one. I hope that just means your otherwise wrapped up in your work rather than something else going on. I hope all is well, and will leave you to it then. :)

Hi @glenalbrethsen! Thanks for watching out ;)

I'm stuck in between all and nothing since a few days already. Of course, my goal is to reach 'all', therefore I didn't even find time for writing a post. I'm not really satisfied yet and I don't have much to talk about in my weekly post, but I think I'm gonna write something later today. The testing phase will begin a bit later than I had planned...

I would love to test the upcoming editor, @steemchiller! 🤩

Huge hug
@amico

I'm sure your editor will be fantastic.

Since Steemit.com made access to my wallet more difficult, I switched to using Steemworld.org to access my wallet and it works flawlessly with Keychain. Thank-you so much for that feature!

I also tried using the Internal Market through Steemworld and I think it is actually slightly more intuitive to use than the one from the wallet link.

I WAS, however, confused by the POWER-UP feature and its slider. I needed to keep some liquid steem available for my contest prize, so I typed in a value rather than use the slider. The slider value did NOT move to reflect the value I typed in. So now I have no way to know WHICH of the 2 values would be executed. As an experiment, I moved the slider to see what happens and it caused the numeric value to change. I then left the slider at the position that was CLOSE to the numeric value I wanted and then altered the numeric value by typing in a new value. The numeric value ended up being the one that was executed and not the slider value. Perhaps you could make that function easier to understand?

I have one thought that you may wish to consider: How do you feel about making the beneficiary of the editor optional? I ask this because I know how difficult it is for small accounts to see any growth at all and losing 10% might make it so that the smaller accounts will either not be using it and miss out or worse, quite Steem altogether. Those who have large incomes can afford to have 10% stripped off and will be providing the largest amounts to you anyway. 10% of tiny accounts will not be worth much anyway, so you would not be losing much.

Another thought would be to use some sort of threshold such as post payouts of greater than $5 would have the beneficiary fee taken, while posts earning less than $5 would not. The $5 threshold is just an example/suggestion. If you decide to implement this idea, I think it would be good to make it obvious to everyone what that threshold amount is.

Thanks again for all your fantastic work!

Wow @happyme, thank you very much for your investigations and the great feedback!

You are absolutely right, the slider should automatically jump to the correct position in case of typing in the value manually. That's now on my list for one of the next updates ;)

I will think about your other points over the coming week. Having kind of a threshold for the minimum payout amount could really be a very good solution. It's not so easy to implement, because the beneficiaries can't be changed after creating a post and the account @steemworld.org would need to send the rewards back to the author after payout, but I like the idea.

That's now on my list for one of the next updates ;)

Sorry to create more work for you, but I suspect you are a bit of a perfectionist so would like to make things as best as possible. Since there are no deadlines to your work, you can prioritize and do only what is most important and leave the rest for later.

I know absolutely nothing about programming, so I have no idea how all that "magic" happens with beneficiaries, but I suspected it would not be easy to wait until pay-out to grab the percentage. It was just an idea and might not be feasible. However, where there is a will, there is a way. It might be more complex, but I suspect you could mine the data of past earnings and create some average. Those who get over a certain average weekly or monthly earning would be affected while the remainder are not. By using past earnings, you also ensure that someone who has JUST broken into the threshold is not immediately penalized. That way if it was a one-time deal where a nice trail passed through, they don't automatically lose some of their earnings. Only when they make consistent good earnings will they need to pay the user fee.

Thanks again for providing this. I don't do Discord and when people say they need Ginabot I wonder why as this tells me everything I need to know.

One slight glitch though. My jaw dropped last night when your Steem info feed claimed Steem had shot up past .80 each, but on checking the exchanges it seems to actually be around the .50-.52 mark. You might want to check how your system is collecting the price feeds as something is off. No biggie for me really as I have no plans on cashing out, but for a minute I was woohoo loudly.

I needed to switch to coincap.io a few months ago (coinmarketcap is no longer free) and there seems to be a bug in their current price discovery logic (https://coincap.io/assets/steem shows the same price). Looks like they currently only use Bithumb as source (prices should come from various exchanges and an average value should be delivered via the API). I guess/hope that it will be fixed in the coming days.

I would like to be a tester.

I am really excited to see your editor in action. Please consider me for Alpha testing.

And thanks for all you do. I really do appreciate it.

Since I've upvoted whatever I could, it is now time to comment - I put it off so as to give myself time to think.

In the steemit editor, I use html - only because I know how to use it. However, as do many coders, I suffer from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, so having to place the markers for opening and closing paragraphs for each paragraph, means my hands are in pain by the end of my day. So I am looking forward to seeing how yours works.

As for the matter of beneficiaries: I assume it means I am designating that the income from my post (upvotes received) will be split, the 10% as noted, plus 90% as I choose...but that comes from the 50% I am receiving in Steem, not the SP part? If so, it means you are actually getting 5% of the total? Is that after the curators have taken their 25%? I ask as I saw witnesses discussing changes to the curator earnings (they say that posters are not important to steemit, only the curators, so they should earn more, and the poster less - if I recall correctly, somewhere between 35 to 40% for curators).

I am not going to volunteer to test since, as you know, I am using an older system which finds ways of causing problems :))

Now, something so simple I am embrrassed to ask, but I've never seen anyone explain it. When I use steemit, for certain processes I am asked to login again and enter my password - either the posting one, or for transferring funds, the active one. It is that simplistic for me. Then I come across you asking for a keychain. Is that a different wallet with other passwords? For instance, I created a Steem Keychain (through steemengine) but I cannot use it as it needs me to move to at least Win7. When I can buy a small harddrive, I intend moving to Mint (Linux) so not going to Win 7.

I suffer from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, so having to place the markers for opening and closing paragraphs for each paragraph, means my hands are in pain by the end of my day. So I am looking forward to seeing how yours works.

I'm not sure, if this is what you need, but paragraphs will be created automatically with my editor. You just type in your text and it will open a new paragraph after hitting the return key twice:

If so, it means you are actually getting 5% of the total?

The beneficiary part is being subtracted beforehand (10% of the 75% that goes to the author). Here is a great info graphic by @jga that shows how the payout is being spread. It's a bit outdated (was HF19 logic with 30 minutes curator time window and beneficiary rewards only in SP), but it's still very useful:

Then I come across you asking for a keychain. Is that a different wallet with other passwords?

I'm currently not using it anymore and I do understand why Steemit does not implement it in it's current state (I guess they will come up with an own solution or fork it and clean up the code, encrypt/hide visible private keys in the settings dialog etc.), but it is still the one extension we have and it works good for most cases (has just been a bit buggy with Firefox on my end, but I'm not sure, if that's still the case).

The beneficiary part is being subtracted beforehand (10% of the 75% that goes to the author).

Thanks. Which sounds like you are getting more?

10% of Author share

or

7.5% of total earned? (if you are earning 10% of the 75%). I would say choose that which SOUNDS less, it is always a better marketing strategy.

They are exactly the same, so maybe I am just quibbling.

Is there any likelyhood of editors ever allowing more than one kind of font (as in html) and colour of fonts? I am posting books of mine (12 x 750 pages) which need colours and fonts for the story to make sense, which as things currently stand, means I will have to post the pages as images of each page - a very cumbersome way of posting and, I imagine, expensive in memory usage. Also, I seem to recall that number of words in a post are important...though I do not recall whether they affect Rep or anything else.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, I am aware of how busy you are and appreciate it.

I would like to try and help out on the editor as n Alpha tester. I do not post very frequently maybe 5 times a week, and mostly picture related post. 1-5 pictures each. I do include a lot of words at times with them though.

I can't even assimilate the amount of work you're doing for us. Thank you very much, I love the idea and I'm sure it's going to be a success. Have all my support!

Great movement sir,, I always chek my growing use your work, very appreciate and very helpful for me. Thanks sir @steemchiller. Hope one day next, this app use Indonesian language too. Hehe

Love to watch this project develop; I am SO looking forward to your post editor! To this point, I have been using SteemPeak as my entry point for most posts. It's workable, but it has its shortcomings. Keep up the good work!

=^..^=

You are a credit to Steemit. Keep up your splendid work!

Con todo mi apoyo. Desde siempre. Muy agradecido por este proyecto.

Hello @steemchiller and thank you for this wonderful tool. However, I have a problem. I have a second account for my actifit activity, my username is @erikahfit and I'm only holding 16 SP at the moment. I've set up autovoter weeks ago (10% for two users), my mana is on 100% but autovoter is not working. At first I thought it might be a mana thing but now my mana is at 100% and a 10% upvote should be possible without any problem. Am I missing something? I would appreciate a little help here.

Hi @erikah, looks like it's related to a setting/problem with the autovoter you are using. Does it still not work? Maybe you should contact the developer of the autovoter ;)

Oh God! I made a mistake, I have confused you with the developer of the autovoter 🤦 😁 Please excuse me and disregard my message. 😁

That will be very cool!

With the weird way SteemIt Inc is doing things, I am very glad about the incredible tool you have been developing. Nowadays I don't need to use SteemIt.com at all¡! 🙋

Nice work! Thank you for all your good work.

Hey dear founder of steemworld.org, i'm very new in steemit platform, here i'm searching for a very special editor tools, that can support me a lot to write my post and upload my art, in your post seeing the feature of your upcoming Editor i'm feeling so exited to write my post with this Editor.
